Even if you’re not a fan of the Kardashian-Jenner family, you’ll know that they’re not exactly publicity-shy. With that in mind, it may have seemed odd for Kim Kardashian to fail to show up for an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. But sister Kourtney revealed all, telling the host and the audience at home exactly why her sibling hadn’t made it – and it seems that Kim had a good reason, too.
And you’d definitely be forgiven for not tuning in to see the famous clan’s – sometimes controversial – escapades on Keeping up with the Kardashians. After all, there’s arguably more content available at present on the small screen than ever before. Some channels specialize, in fact, in providing non-stop reality TV for the viewers at home. But while many other shows in the reality genre have faded fast in the last few years, Keeping Up with the Kardashians has been going strong since 2007.
Following the exploits of the titular family, the show has made celebrities of Kim, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian as well as their mom, Kris Jenner. And following its premiere on the E! network, Keeping Up with the Kardashians has proved to be a winner amongst audiences – with millions having tuned in to see the latest twists and turns in the lives of its glamorous stars.
When season 16 of the show was in full swing, however, Kris appeared on a special episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. And to mark Mother’s Day, the host surprised the reality star by bringing out her daughter Kourtney and her various grandkids. But after sitting down, the oldest Kardashian sister decided to make a – shocking – announcement about Kim.
What could it be? After all, the world knows so much about Kim already. Fans are well aware, for example, that she grew up in Beverly Hills, California, alongside Kourtney, Rob and Khloé. Their father, Robert, was a lawyer who had famously worked on the OJ Simpson trial, while mom Kris had tried her hand at running a boutique store. Despite the family’s wealth, though, one thing had been made very clear in the Kardashian household.
In particular, Kim and her siblings were informed that they needed to make their own income after they had turned 18. And potentially with that in mind, Kim looked to gain a bit of work experience during her time at Marymount High School, eventually ending up with a position at Movie Tunes, Inc. – a business owned by her dad.
When Robert passed away from cancer in 2003, however, Kim, Kourtney, Rob and Khloé all inherited his firm before eventually selling it on. And from there, Kim began to forge her own career as a businesswoman. At first, in fact, she started up a production company.
That wasn’t Kim’s only foray into the world of work, however, as in 2006 she teamed up with Kourtney and Khloé to launch their own boutique business named D-A-S-H. The first store was in the sisters’ home state of California, with further outlets going on to spring up in cities such as New York. But in April 2018 the trio made a big decision: D-A-S-H was closing down. The move ended a venture that had lasted for over a decade.
Still, during the early days of that business, the Kardashian family had already set into motion one constant in their lives – and arguably their most successful endeavor to date. Yes, in 2007, the Kardashian-Jenners started to appear on their very own reality television series on the E! network.
Keeping Up with the Kardashians – supposedly capturing the everyday lives of the clan – hit the small screen that fall. And thanks to Kris, the show also followed the Jenner family. After splitting up with Robert in 1991, you see, the socialite had tied the knot with former athlete Caitlyn Jenner not long after that.
Then, over the next few years, Keeping Up with the Kardashians became one of the biggest reality shows on television. A number of spin-offs followed, too, as the franchise went from strength to strength. And all the while, Kim became a tabloid darling, with the media seemingly tracking her every move.
Naturally, various aspects of Kim’s life were put under the spotlight – including her relationships. Fans know, of course, that the star married twice before she met her current husband to Damon Thomas and Kris Humphries, but both of those couplings would sadly end in divorce.
In 2012, however, Kim started to date music superstar Kanye West. And at the end of that year, the famous duo confirmed that they were having a baby together – with the new arrival coming into the world in June 2013. The reality television star gave birth to a little girl, who would be given the name North.
Unfortunately for Kim, though, she faced some difficulties during labor. “My placenta stayed attached inside my uterus, which is a condition called placenta accreta,” the mom wrote on her official website. “This is a high-risk condition that happens when the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall.”
Kim’s physician had therefore needed to act quickly following North’s birth. “My doctor had to stick his entire arm in me and detach the placenta with his hand, scraping it away from my uterus with his fingernails,” she recalled. “My mom was crying; she had never seen anything like this before.”
Off the back of that harrowing experience, Kim then had to contend with fertility problems in her efforts for another baby. Thankfully, she was ultimately able to overcome those issues, as in 2015 she confirmed that she was expecting her second kid – although yet again there would be a big challenge on the horizon.
You see, after giving birth to a little boy named Saint in December 2015, Kim experienced the same medical issue with her placenta as she had following North’s arrival. Ultimately, then, when she and West – whom she married back in May 2014 – were keen to add another new face to their family, they looked at an alternative method.
More specifically, Kim opted to use a surrogate mother in order to bring her third child into the world. “You know, it is really different,” she said of the situation in a 2017 interview with Entertainment Tonight. “Anyone that says or thinks it is just the easy way out is just completely wrong.”
“I think it is so much harder to go through [pregnancy] this way because you are not really in control,” Kim continued. “And, you know, obviously you pick someone that you completely trust and that you have a good bond and relationship with [to be your surrogate]. But knowing that I was able to carry my first two babies and not my baby now – it’s hard for me.”
Kim then reflected on the thoughts she’d had before enlisting a surrogate. “I thought this was going to be so easy,” she said. “But, you know, even in how much I hated [being pregnant], if I could do it myself I would have preferred that… That inner struggle is kind of hard, but I am just rolling with it.”
So, in January 2018 Kim’s surrogate gave birth to a baby girl whom the star and West named Chicago. Then, months later, the celebrity pair chose to have a second baby from a surrogate mother – although on this occasion the Kardashian-Wests opted to employ another woman for the process.
And Kim spoke about the situation in 2019. “I love my surrogate; we have a really good relationship,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I really trust her… The first time that I went through [the surrogacy process], I was a little bit more anxious and texting more and calling more.”
Kim added, “I feel like my surrogate this time around really is such a protecting person, and I really trust that in her. So, I feel really calm and at ease. I don’t know if it’s a fourth kid thing or [because] we’ve been through the surrogacy before, [but] you just get a little bit more calm as they go.”
While Kim was preparing for the arrival of her fourth child, however, her mother, Kris, appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. And as the special episode marked Mother’s Day that year, the mom of four took the opportunity to reflect on her own pregnancies.
“I wasn’t one of those girls who thought I was going to do it naturally,” Kris tells Ellen during the course of the segment. “I needed to have, you know, a little assist, but once I had the epidural and surrendered to the whole experience… another human being is coming out of you. You’re making a baby. It’s a miracle!”
At that point, Kris goes on to offer some words of wisdom to the mothers in the audience. “When you first become a mom, the most important thing is just to enjoy every second because it goes by so fast,” she says. “I mean, so fast! In a blink of an eye!”
Kris adds, “We celebrated Kourtney’s 40th birthday this last month, and I can’t believe I have a 40-year-old. But every single thing – movies, pictures, [writing] things down – it’s just a special, special time in your life. You can’t really explain it to someone until you guys have all gone through it.”
But as that conversation comes to a close, Ellen switches gears. “You know I like surprising you,” she tells Kris. “So, hey, Kourtney and six of your grandkids, come on out!” The socialite’s oldest daughter then walks on to the stage, flanked by six of the younger members of the Kardashian family.
Yes, Kourtney is joined by her own three children – Penelope, Reign and Mason – as well as Kim’s three youngsters: North, Chicago and Saint. The surprise understandably leaves Kris in tears as she greets each of her grandkids. And the group all approach the sofa, rearranging themselves as they go.
Then, after everyone is seated, Ellen moves down the line, asking the kids to introduce themselves to the audience. Of the six, Reign is certainly the most talkative, as he continues to speak throughout the segment. Meanwhile, Kris – with Penelope perched on her knee – is still reeling from the shock reveal.
“Oh my God, this is the best surprise!” Kris enthusiastically tells Ellen. “I’m so excited. I saw Reign and Penelope last night for a couple of minutes. [But] I’ve been gone for a minute, and I haven’t seen the rest of them. So, this makes me so happy!”
Ellen has one more trick up her sleeve, though. After the host reveals that Kim was also meant to make an appearance, she offers the floor to Kourtney to explain why her sister couldn’t be there. And once again, Kris is left stunned when the truth comes to light.
“My mom doesn’t even know this, but Kim’s surrogate went into labor,” Kourtney reveals, bringing a gasp from the audience. “So, she’s at the hospital.” And at this point, Kris can’t help but ask one question. “What are we doing sitting here? Come on, Ellen, fire up the car!” she jokes.
Then, when Ellen asks Kourtney if anyone else was aware of the big news, the reality star responds simply with a shake of her head. “So, we had to keep it quiet,” the host tells a stunned Kris. “But yes, that’s why [Kim is] not here, because the surrogate went into labor. She’s there.”
After that, Kourtney reiterates the previous point to those people in the studio audience. “Nobody knows [about the labor],” she says. “So, everybody in the audience, don’t tell!” Kris quickly interjects, “Yeah, no tweeting or posting yet!” And on that note, the entertaining segment comes to a close.
The clip of Kourtney’s bombshell was subsequently uploaded to YouTube via the show’s official channel, and it’s fair to say that it’s drawn a big response. To date, the video has earned close to 19 million views and more than 263,000 likes, in fact, as well as over 15,000 comments.
And many YouTube users couldn’t help but focus on Kourtney and Kim’s children – Reign in particular. One person noted a distinct family resemblance, too, writing in response to the footage, “Reign is exactly like [his father] Scott [Disick].”
“Saint [is] exactly like Kanye,” the commenter continued. “Chicago looks identical to Kim when she was a kid. Penelope and Mason are so chill and well behaved. Also, North is already a star. She doesn’t act like a diva – more like a fashionista. I can tell Kim’s kids are so chill 85 percent of the time.”
As for Kim’s fourth child, the surrogate successfully delivered a baby boy on May 10, 2019, with his mom and dad choosing to name the newborn Psalm. And shortly after the arrival, Kim herself took to Twitter to share the good news with her fans – before making an interesting observation.
“[Psalm is] here, and he’s perfect!” Kim wrote on the social media website. “He’s also Chicago’s twin! I’m sure he will change a lot, but now he looks just like her.” That message generated a sizable response, too, with close to 50,000 retweets and over 730,000 likes – along, of course, with a lot of fans offering their congratulations.
Way before Psalm’s birth, though, Kim courted controversy when she began dating West. And while the pair’s relationship has since progressed to a seemingly happy marriage, apparently it could have all ended very differently if the rapper had listened to – and followed – some advice he was given.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have been married for six years now. And, perhaps to the surprise of some, their relationship seems stronger than ever. The rapper and the reality TV star have gone through a lot in order to get married and start a family. In fact, as a documentary recently revealed, Kanye was once told to not bother with Kim at all.
The documentary in question was an episode of the rebooted E! True Hollywood Story. Ever since the series originally started back in 1996, it’s been noted for the drama and salaciousness of its biographies. The Kim-Kanye episode aired on October 13, 2019, and was an absolute must-watch for fans of the famous reality TV couple.
Kim, along with several members of her inner circle, had a lot of revelations to make on the show. Some of them were funny and some were downright strange. However, the one about Kanye and how he defied naysayers in order to be with the reality star was actually very touching. Viewers of the show might walk away with a different opinion about the mega-couple Kimye.
The couple have been massive in the reality TV world for a long time now, and they’re not afraid to flaunt their wealth and fame. When they got married in May 2014, it was a huge, globe-spanning party. It started off in France, with a bachelorette party at Paris’ Eiffel Tower no less. And it all ended at the luxurious Forte di Belvedere in Florence.
And that’s not the only time Kimye have been, well, Kimye. When their daughter North had her first birthday a month after the wedding, the party wasn’t just a cake and a few friends invited round . Nope, it was a huge celebration with a Ferris wheel and several stages for entertainment. The proud parents nicknamed it “Kidchella.”
The Kardashian-Wests have been subject to a lot of hate and criticism over the years. Kim especially is considered the kind of celebrity who’s just “famous for being famous.” In 2015 T Magazine said in a piece on Kanye, “When the couple appeared together on the cover of Vogue [magazine] last year, the move was, depending on your perspective, a stroke of PR genius or a naked plea for highbrow validation.”
But the personal relationship between the two megastars has actually always been a fairly normal one. Kim actually discussed their first meeting on her episode of E! True Hollywood Story. As she explained, “I met Kanye in 2002. He would ask everyone who I was and they would say, ‘Oh, you know, she has a boyfriend.’”
Kim went on, “We just always kept on connecting and coming into each other’s lives, and then he invited me to Paris to his fashion show. And then that’s when it, like, happened. That’s when we started our relationship. But I was like, ‘Why didn’t this happen sooner?’ It was just right.”
The couple have four children together now – North, of course, plus Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. The reality star found it difficult to have a family, because she suffered from pre-eclampsia during her pregnancy with North and placenta accrete afterwards, which required surgery. As a result, following a difficult second pregnancy with Saint, Chicago and Psalm were delivered via a surrogate.
Everything seems to be going well at the moment for Kim and family. But things weren’t always like that. The reality star also discussed her childhood during the documentary, including the period of her life when her father, famed lawyer Robert Kardashian, defended O.J. Simpson during his 1994 double murder trial.
O.J. Simpson was accused of murdering his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman. Nicole also happened to be a good friend of Kim’s mother, Kris Jenner. Kris and Robert were divorced at that point, but the reality star remembers the whole terrible incident. As she told told E!, “[That was] the first time my family really got divided.”
It seems that Kim and her sister Kourtney got to see those divisions up close. “One day my dad took me and Kourtney into the trial,” she said. “And then my mom happened to be sitting with Nicole’s family. […] We looked over and my mom was looking at us, like, ‘What are you girls doing here? Why are you sitting on that side?’”
There was even worse to come as the trial went on. At one point the Kardashian family exited a restaurant to find the ugly words “n***** lover” scrawled over their car. The Simpson case had inflamed racial tensions all over the country, and the teenage Kim got to see some of that first-hand.
Kim also got an unpleasant lesson in the workings of the media at that time. At one point, she said during the documentary, she went to see her father. And the next day, that visit was reported as “Robert Kardashian’s mistress pulls up to his house.” The reality star said, “I was like, this can’t be real – they lie like this? I learned the lesson of, not everything is what you think it is.”
And yet, despite all that, Kim still wanted to be a reality TV star when she got older. Her old friend Allison Statter appeared on the documentary and said, “The Real World launched in 1992 when Kim and I were 12 years old. And Kim was mesmerized. She was like, ‘I have got to get on The Real World.’”
According to Kim, her father was even once told by a psychic that the Kardashian family would become even more well-known than they already were. She explained, “The psychic told him, ‘Ya know, your last name Kardashian is going to be known worldwide. And it’s not now, […] because of your O.J. fame.’ And my dad was like, ‘Yeah, okay, this is exactly why I don’t like psychics.’”
And it was another friend of Kris’s, Kathie Lee Gifford, who ended up encouraging the Kardashians to get their own spot on reality TV. During the documentary, the famous mom said, “[She] would tell me constantly, ‘You guys need a show. Nobody would believe what goes on in your life.’ This went on for a couple of years, until I met the casting director for Dancing With the Stars. She came over for dinner one night and was just watching all of this chaos. She goes, ‘This is just crazy, I’ve got to introduce you to Ryan Seacrest.’”
Obviously, the rest is history. But Kim also learned, as she revealed to E!, several reality TV tricks from her friend Paris Hilton. This was before she ended up eclipsing her spotlight. Once upon a time, though, as entertainment journalist Leslie Bruce said on the show, the future reality star was “best known as being Paris Hilton’s sidekick.”
That all changed, though, and it was partly down to Paris herself. She taught Kim the ins and outs of the business. As the reality star recalled during the documentary, “I remember we were sitting in her SLR Mercedes… And at that point, the paparazzi would lay on the ground to try and get a picture of you, up your dress, and she said, ‘Okay. We need to make sure you don’t give them that.’”
Kim went on, “[Paris] was such a great mentor for me. I really am grateful for my experiences with her… She’s a huge, huge reason for my success.” The relationship between the two women has been very strained at times, however, with some nasty things said back in 2008. But these days, the pair do appear to be getting along.
The future reality star also quickly learned how to manipulate the media. Before Kim was the international megastar she is today, her friend Jonathan Cheban told her she had to “do something crazy.” Why? To ensure that her life was considered newsworthy. He then explained on E! True Hollywood Story what the two of them did.
As Jonathan revealed to E!, “We were in New York. And Britney Spears was in this hotel, locked up in her room. We notice there’s paparazzi outside.” So the pair got into a Rolls Royce – those are the sort of cars you have easy access to when you’re super rich – and pulled it up outside the hotel.
But Kim and Jonathan didn’t get a glimpse of the famous singer. Instead, they simply hid. Jonathan said, “We literally go hide in the lobby in a phone booth, wait ten minutes, then come out. And the next day the story was ‘Kim went to see Britney.’” The reality star herself then added, “They said in the press that we were there to have dinner with Britney Spears. [And] this whole thing didn’t even happen.”
Of course, stories like that don’t help the reality star’s reputation of becoming famous for being famous. In fact, they make it easier to assume that the parts of Kim’s life that we see have been carefully manipulated for maximum exposure. But her relationship with her now-husband has always seemed authentic. And that’s despite the level of reality TV fame and wealth that they both command.
During the show, Kim talked about how Kanye was warned off from her at the beginning. In fact, E! True Hollywood Story had located some old tweets from people about the relationship. And they include things such as, “Hey @KimKardashian, you are ruining Kanye. Give him back to us.”
Perhaps some people might have been frightened away by that, but not Kanye. As Kim explained on the documentary, “Everyone would tell him, you can’t be with her, she’s a reality star, she’s gonna sink your career. And he was just like ‘But I love her. Like, I don’t care.’” And the rapper himself had something to say on the show.
Kanye told the documentary why he fell in love with his wife. He said, “Anytime I was around her, [or] I saw her, it was a magnetic attraction to this force of energy. She was good, pure, happy, loving, […] brave, courageous, strong.” Clearly, some bad advice and a few mean tweets weren’t going to keep him away.
The rapper has, of course, spoken before about his relationship with Kim. On Hot 97’s The Angie Martinez Show back in 2013, he said, “Our love story is a love story for the ages. I felt like when we first got together, it was like a Romeo and Juliet kind of thing, where she’s a reality star and I’m a rapper, and people talk about how our brands connect and what doesn’t fit.”
And in September 2019, the month before their episode of E! True Hollywood Story aired, Kanye interviewed Kim for Vogue Arabia magazine. The intimate conversation marked a first for the couple, as they’d never done anything like that before. Just like the documentary, it also granted an inside look into the everyday life of the superstar pair.
Kanye asked Kim, “If you could choose not to be a celebrity and have a more peaceful but happy life out of the spotlight, would you do it?” She answered, “I think I live an awesome life. Even in my darkest of times I don’t regret putting myself out there for the world to see. People have shared with me over the years how much it has helped them to feel less alone when dealing with their own adversity.”
During the interview, the pair discussed Kim’s new venture, educating herself to become a lawyer. “I’ve always been interested in law, in studying law,” the reality star said. “As I started to become interested in criminal justice reform, I felt the urge to learn more so that I could do more. I knew that the only way I could help was if I was really educated on the laws and the system.”
Kim then added, “But I know that my dad would love it, he would be so proud. He would totally be the one helping me study and would have taken the job of helping me with my flashcards away from you. He would have been so happy to do that.” Sadly, the reality star’s father didn’t live to see her follow in his footsteps. Robert Kardashian died in 2003 after a battle with esophageal cancer.
Kanye also asked Kim if “reading unpleasant things” about themselves in the news ever upset her. She answered, “When it’s about my family, I get really protective. Most of the time when things are so baseless or absurd, I have a good laugh. But as far as dealing with it on a daily level for me, I’m pretty content.”
And then, the couple began speaking about how they first encountered each other. “What did you think of me the first time we met?” Kanye asked his wife. Kim said, “This was before you released your first album and you were known as a music producer. I was really shy.”
Kim went on, “You thought I was [R&B singer] Brandy’s assistant, which I wasn’t. Ever since you said that, it’s everywhere… Like, ‘Kim is Brandy’s assistant.’ I was her friend and stylist. I thought you were attractive, nice, very charming, really funny, powerful. I was in awe of you, but I was really shy, quiet, and a little nervous, to be honest.”
Kanye then asked his wife the sweetest question, “How did you realize I was the one for you?” Kim answered, “When I went to New York and we went to dinner and the movies, it was just so much fun. I remember I wore a Givenchy feather jacket and leather pants. It was super chill and so effortless being together.”
Kim then said much the same thing she would say in the E! True Hollywood Story documentary. “After spending that whole week together, I realized you were the one and then I was like, ‘Damn, why did I waste so much time and energy?’” she told her husband. “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”
Kanye and Kim also discussed their family. “Growing up, I always thought I wanted four kids. And then after we had North, I didn’t think we were going to have another one because of how difficult the pregnancy was,” the reality star said. “After we had Saint, I for sure thought we were done. But then we kept going – and now we have four.”
Kim talked happily about the individual personalities of her four children and what traits they had inherited from their parents. “Hopefully they will have little bits of us and lots of themselves,” she said. And then Kanye asked her, “How do you want our children to remember us?” The mom-of-four said she thought about that all the time.
The reality star said, “I often reflect on the most amazing childhood I had. […] I want them to always be able to look back and say, ‘I had the most awesome life. My parents gave me all of the tools to be great and happy in life. They were fun, good, awesome parents and they were always there.’” All things considered, then, those kids are lucky their father wasn’t warned away from their mother.
