Celebrities button, zip and sometimes even sew themselves into beautiful outfits for the annual Academy Awards. But even with all the careful planning and teams of stylists in the world, things can still go horribly wrong. And unfortunately for the famous people in attendance at the Oscars, cameras are usually there to capture any awkward moments that ensue. The following 40 mishaps, for example, all prove that being a star doesn’t mean you’re no longer human.

40. Charlize Theron, 2000

In 2000 Charlize Theron wore a beautiful orange Vera Wang dress to the Oscars. Alas, though, the gown showed a little too much of her butt. And four years later, the star duly lamented to The Baltimore Sun, “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve auditioned for a role only to have my agent come back and say, ‘Listen, Charlize, they saw you in the orange dress, and they don’t think you can do it.’” Still, that didn’t actually stop Theron from winning the Best Actress award in 2004.

39. Liza Minnelli, 2014

Back in 2014, Liza Minnelli made headlines for all the wrong reasons. And while the bright blue ensemble she sported to the Oscars was certainly eye-catching, it was what was under the outfit that arguably drew the most attention. Yes, not only was Minelli bra-less, but people could also see her nipple shields through her clothing. Oops!

38. Jennifer Lopez, 2012

While Jennifer Lopez was presenting an award on stage with Cameron Diaz at the 2012 Oscars, there seemed to be a nip slip. And Twitter got very excited at that prospect, with one social media user even going on to create an account going under the name of “JLO’s Nipple.” Perhaps inevitably, though, the star’s stylists insisted that nothing untoward had actually happened, and that instead people had only seen a shadow.

37. Lupita Nyong’o, 2014

When she collected her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, Lupita Nyong’o wore a lovely pale blue Prada dress. Unfortunately, though, the outfit was possibly a little impractical, as it later got stuck on a decorative plant. Maybe the branch liked the dress so much that it wanted to keep it…

36. Kendall Jenner, 2019

Kendall Jenner arrived at the 2019 Vanity Fair Oscars party wearing an extremely daring dress. It was so daring, in fact, that any underwear would have been pretty much visible to anyone. And as the model appeared to have very little in the way of covering her modesty, she may have come very close to showing her fellow partygoers much more than they may have wanted to see.

35. Sally Kirkland, 2007

Sally Kirkland is known for wearing slightly strange outfits to the Oscars, but she arguably outdid herself in 2007. On that occasion, the veteran actress sported a brightly colored – and very revealing – dress. And to this day, Kirkland’s odd caped creation still makes it onto lists of the most controversial Oscar outfits ever.

34. Beyoncé, 2005

Even Beyoncé is prone to wardrobe malfunctions every now and again. For example, during her Phantom of the Opera performance at the 77th Academy Awards, the star’s shoe had been secretly hanging off. Beyoncé later explained during a 2005 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, “I’m trying to remember the words, and my ear monitor’s turned off – and my shoe is off of my foot, actually, inside of the dress. So, I’m on one toe, and I’m in one heel.”

31. Hailee Steinfeld, 2017

If 2011 nominee Hailee Steinfeld looked awkward in 2017, it was because she was trying to hide a tear in her gown. Later on, she told People, “I ran to this wonderful woman who was backstage… she cut a piece off the back of the dress and sewed it on to the front of the dress to make it look like it was just part of the dress. By the time I presented, you couldn’t tell. It was a nightmare.”

30. Selma Blair, 2019

As Selma Blair walked the red carpet in a strapless gown, her nipple was exposed for a second or two. Oops! But luckily for the star, her mere presence at the 2019 Academy Awards proved to be the real attention-grabber. You see, the event marked the first time that Blair – and her stylish cane – had appeared at a prestigious ceremony since her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2018.

I’m just trying to soak it all in and not mess it all up.”

27. Oprah Winfrey, 1986

When Oprah Winfrey attended her first Oscars ceremony in 1986, she was under-prepared. More specifically, the TV host and actress – who had been nominated for her role in The Color Purple – had neglected to try on her dress beforehand. And in 2012 Oprah told Jimmy Kimmel that in order to get the gown on, her stylist “had to lay [her] down on the floor and push [her] butt down and zip.” She also had to lie down in the limo that was taking her to the awards, which sounds pretty uncomfortable.

26. Nicole Kidman, 2017

Unfortunately, the Giorgio Armani gown that Nicole Kidman wore to the 2017 Oscars didn’t quite hold up. And Greer relived the incident in her 2014 book I Don’t Know What You Know Me From: Confessions of a Co-Star, writing, “I stopped for photos but couldn’t do any interviews. I was afraid if I opened my mouth to speak, I would cry, because I was sobbing on the inside.”

22. Elisabetta Canalis, 2010

All hail George Clooney. In 2010 the Up in the Air nominee brought his then-girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis to the Academy Awards. 20. Jenny McCarthy, 1997

When Jenny McCarthy wore a floral Valentino gown on the red carpet, she failed to noticed that she’d made a mistake. As the model told EW Radio in 2014, “I was wondering why [my outfit] was so tight in the boobs… I didn’t realize I was wearing it backwards until Valentino came up to me at the Vanity Fair party and said, ‘Darling, you’re wearing my dress backwards.’”

17. Jason Segel, 2012

While it may seem that only female stars suffer red-carpet mishaps, The Muppets writer and actor Jason Segel had an embarrassing moment of his own at the 2012 Oscars. Yes, on that occasion, Segel may have been left red-faced when buttons popped off his tux shirt. But, fortunately, help was at hand. According to Muppets co-writer Nick Stoller, who spoke to Entertainment Weekly, the actor received assistance from Nick Nolte’s date, as “every woman at the Oscars apparently has double-stick tape.”

16. Ashley Judd, 1998

When presenting an award at the 1998 Oscars, Ashley Judd sported a Richard Tyler dress complete with a very high slit. Debate then raged about whether the actress had been wearing underwear or nothing at all underneath the gown. Oh, and to make things even more awkward, her mother was there, too.

However, such was her composure after the fact that you would have been hard-pressed to spot anything wrong. 5. Anne Hathaway, 2013

4. Barbra Streisand, 1969

As a young star, poor Barbra Streisand suffered an absolute disaster at the 1969 Oscars ceremony. 3. Mariah Carey, 2017

She lamented, “I still love the dress itself, but I should have worn a bra.”
