When Ciara appeared on The View in May 2019, she talked about the Met Gala and her new album. Ciara had already shed a few tears during the show. This was due to the emotion of reliving special moments with her husband and children while watching her video. But when the surprise message came, the waterworks really got going. And you can’t blame the star. In less than a decade she went from a difficult relationship to one that was full of mutual love and understanding.

It seems that the singer’s personal life has been a whirlwind over the past few years. Before her marriage to Wilson, Ciara was one half of a different high-profile relationship. Indeed, she used to be engaged to rapper Future. He reportedly proposed to the star outside her private jet, just as she was celebrating her 28th birthday in 2013.

Then, in 2014, Ciara confirmed on The View that she and Future were going to have a baby. A few months later, their son, Future Zahir Wilburn, came along. Unfortunately, not long after that, things took a turn for the worse in the couple’s relationship, with the media watching intently.

A few months after baby Future was born, reports hit that Ciara had called off the wedding, and, indeed, the engagement. The relationship was over. Why? Future had, allegedly, cheated on his fiancée with a wardrobe consultant. The rapper told a different story, however, saying he’d been the one to end it.

Needless to say, the situation was a rough one for Ciara. However, the following year she found new love with Russell Wilson, the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks. And he seemed to adore her completely, telling the media he’d been a fan of hers before they even started going out.

This new relationship appeared not to sit well with Future, especially since Wilson was now serving as a surrogate father figure to his and Ciara’s child. Come 2016, the rapper started slamming his ex-fiancée on social media. He complained about the custody battles over their son and called her a “controlling b****.”

But none of that appeared to dent the new couple’s relationship. Indeed, in March 2016, the pair got engaged. They announced the new development in a sweet Instagram video. “She said yes! Yeah!” Wilson said excitedly. “Making this thing happen. My baby.” Ciara, wearing a very large ring, added “God is so good.”

Ciara and Wilson are both religious and for this reason they decided to abstain from sex until they were married. “I’m human, so it is not easy, especially when I look at him and I think he is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” Ciara said in 2016 when Cosmopolitan magazine asked her how the relationship was going.

During the same interview, Ciara then sang the praises of her new man. “He’s such an awesome guy and the cool thing is that every day, we’re growing with each other,” she said. “We get to have really healthy conversations and focus on each other as people. That is very important to me and him… We’re just enjoying ourselves and going one day at a time and praying and staying positive.”

She was the first child for Wilson and he was, of course, thrilled. “When you have your own family and it continues to grow, it’s a special thing,” he told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that year. “I’m truly grateful every day to get to come home. It puts a smile on my face every time.”

On a similar note, in 2018, Ciara discussed motherhood with E! News, just days after Sienna’s first birthday. While there, it seems that the star had plenty to say.

Ciara spoke about how raising a daughter presented a new challenge for her. “I didn’t know what to expect. I’m such a tomboy that I was honestly kind of a little worried or curious about how I would do with a little girl,” she said. But every day when she saw her children playing, it inspired a feeling of awe.

As for Wilson, Ciara couldn’t help but sing his praises. “He’s been such an incredible father since day one,” she told E! News. But the star didn’t stop there. “He’s so loving and very patient. He also likes to have fun. He’s very spontaneous and we just have a good time as a family,” she said.

E! News then asked Ciara if Wilson, who always gave his all when on the football field “took it down a notch” at home. “Russell relax? That doesn’t even go into the same sentence,” the star answered. “He inspires me, he’s so driven and very ambitious. And he’s always working hard whether he’s on the field or off the field. He’s always trying to make an impact in any way that he can.”

Ciara also spoke about a charity endeavour she took part in for Mother’s Day that year. She had gone to Los Angeles’ Children’s Bureau to give out jewelry pieces from Pandora to other mothers. And the following year, Ciara got to feel that way once again, this time, though, on air. Indeed, during an appearance on The View in 2019, the star was discussing her new album. The music video for her song “Beauty Marks, ” played during the show, contained a lot of home footage taken of her and her family, including her wedding and Sienna’s birth. But little did she know that a surprise awaited her.

After the birth of Ciara’a daughter was shown in the “Beauty Marks” video, she shared how difficult the process had been. “They left out a lot of stuff… Oh, that girl beat me up in delivery.” And right after that snippet, the star was told there was a surprise for her. It turned out her husband wanted to honor the mom-of-two for everything she’d done.

Indeed, Wilson suddenly popped up on the screen. “Hey Ciara, I wish I was there with you right now. I know the kids and I, we’re back here in Seattle. [But] we just wanted to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day,” he said. “There’s no one better than you. You’re the sweetest woman in the world, you truly give us light.”

The devoted husband went on, “You change the world, you make the world a better place, you encourage, you inspire and I’m grateful I get to be your husband. I love you so much.” Then the Wilson children appeared. “I love you. You’re the best mom and I love you so much, wherever you go, I still love you,” Future called out.

In the studio, there was barely a dry eye in the house. “God is good,” Ciara said, crying openly and wiping away her tears. And then the hosts asked an important question of the star. “Why did you want you share with the world so many moments in your life that were so personal to you?” And in answer, the star had a well-thought-out reason.

Ciara’s love for her husband and children formed part of her answer. “These moments are real, the journey I’ve gone on in life is real, it was the best way for me to tell my story,” she said. “When I met the love of my life, he was not only loving me, you know, [but] to love me was to love my son.”

Indeed, it’s pretty safe to that that Ciara definitely had a good Mother’s Day in 2019. She posted about it on Instagram, in fact, alongside pictures of her children. “My greatest accomplishments in life! You two have helped me discover strengths I didn’t know existed in me,” she wrote. “You’ve taught me patience and, most of all, you continuously show me pure love! Mama will always be here for you!”

And it wasn’t just Ciara who got a special surprise from Wilson that Mother’s Day. The quarterback, in fact, also got a present for his own mother, Tammy, his only surviving parent since the death of his father in 2010. Indeed, the famous son bought her a brand new house and even filmed a video of her being handed the keys.

Ciara and Sienna were both there when Tammy received her house. The mother was so overwhelmed with surprise she thought it might even be a prank. “No, are you serious? For real?… That’s not funny!” she gasps on the video. But it really was a brand new house just for her, courtesy of her superstar son.

Many people commented on the video, including Wilson’s fellow sportsman Dwyane Wade, who wrote “Amazing!” But Ciara posted the most touching comment of them all. “What a beautiful day and moments. Tears of Joy! The perfect Mother’s Day. God, you’re a good father,” she wrote to her husband.

Wilson definitely knows the importance of having a great mom. In fact, in 2017 he wrote a letter to Tammy and read it to her in a SportsCenter video. “I want to thank you for always being there as a positive force in my life,” he said. “You are the definition of a perfect woman: the giver, nurturer, caretaker, who exudes grace at all times no matter what obstacles life throws at you.”

The quarterback then told his mom, “I’ll always love and admire you for how you cared for dad until the very end. I’ll never know how you stayed strong even in the darkest and most trying times.” And he also said to her, “I’m thankful for you being the strong female role model that you are, so I knew what to look for in my own life partner.”

Then, in June 2019, Wilson shared with HollywoodLife how being married to Ciara had changed his world, not least in that the relationship made him a father. “I came in the league and I didn’t have kids at first. I always wanted kids. That’s one thing I always wanted and hoped and prayed for,” he said.

Wilson’s experience of parenthood, it seems, has changed his outlook on his career as well. “You get to share these amazing memories with your kids and family. I get to see them after the game — three Seahawks jerseys — and they are all grinning ear to ear. It’s the best blessing in the world. I’m just so grateful for that!” he said.

Also in June 2019, Ciara gave a fairly revealing interview about how she had gone from a problematic relationship with Future to a healthy one with Wilson. She sat down with Jada Pinkett Smith for Red Table Talk, the actor’s Facebook Watch show, and she had plenty of things to say.

Ciara didn’t actually name Future in the interview. She did, however speak about the difficulties she’d had in a previous relationship, which could only be with the rapper. “I’d have moments when I would be in the shower, I’d be crying,” she said. “I had a few different settings — crying in the bedroom, crying in the shower… Crying because I’m not in the happiest place.”

As a result, the star ended up looking back at her parents’ relationship to work out what was going wrong with Future. “It would get to a point where I was like, my dad wouldn’t do this to my mom. This can’t be love,” she said. “I’ve always had the same goal of wanting to be loved a certain way. I was just walking in the wrong direction.”

And Ciara once more talked about what a great dad Wilson proved to be. “He was so proud of, like, Future’s first steps. When I go to teacher-parent conferences, he’s at every one of them with me. And I make sure I schedule it so he can be there. His schedule’s crazy, but we make it happen, because those details matter,” she said.

Ciara was then asked if she would have any more children with Wilson. And she responded that she wanted to. “I do think about it and I do wanna do it again, of course, at the right time. There’s no perfect timing, but I’m having fun dancing right now with a little flat tummy. So I’m gonna enjoy this,” she said.

The star, has, in fact, has spoken about having more children before. In 2018, during an interview with Wonderland magazine, she said, “Hopefully there will be more kids, for sure. Well, you know, I got time!” She didn’t state the exact number of children she wanted, but there may very well be more Wilson kids present a Mother’s Day or two down the line.
