Reminiscing about the past is an indulgence few of us can stop ourselves from doing. Indeed, we can’t help but look back with a real fondness and yearning, regardless of how things actually were. And nowadays, even those who were seemingly too young at the time can, astonishingly, jump into a world of nostalgia. On that note, fashion trends from one particular era have been creeping back into popular culture.
Now in the last decade or so, film and television have been immersing themselves in bygone eras and retro styles. What’s more, these depictions of fashion and lifestyle from the past have become incredibly popular. For example, Netflix’s Stranger Things arguably epitomizes the public’s love for the 1980s in almost every way. But in the social media sphere, another time period has recently come to the fore.
Yes, believe it or not, the 2000s were a unique time for the world of fashion. With a number of trends emerging, from butterfly clips to skinny eyebrows, young celebrities regularly sported these dapper looks. And some of those styles have now made a comeback in 2019 thanks to social media.
Not so long ago, a group of users on the video app TikTok posted clips of themselves undergoing 2000s-style makeovers. To further set the mood, the posts are backed by the Britney Spears’ anthem “Oops!… I Did It Again.” Now that song came out just after the millennium, almost 20 years ago, and catapulted Britney to fame. So perhaps unsurprisingly, these newer videos have been gathering a lot of traction online.
In the last few years, social media websites have continued to grow in popularity across the world. As a result of that, people now have a choice as to what service they would prefer to use. Indeed, there are a variety of options out there today, catering to different wants and needs.
For some, Facebook is still the ideal social media website. Indeed, people can post lengthy messages, and share photos with their friends while joining groups and advertising events. Meanwhile, others might prefer Twitter for its simplicity, given the restricted number of characters you can use in a tweet. But the range of choices doesn’t end there, though.
That’s right, away from Facebook and Twitter, Instagram also offers an intriguing alternative for online users. And unlike the other two services, the latter is primarily a photo-sharing website with some additional perks. Indeed, people are able to share brief video clips on their respective accounts as well, but that’s not all.
Furthermore, users can message their friends on Instagram too, while another feature came into play in 2016. Yes, that summer, “Instagram Stories” was released. And much like Snapchat, people could post images and videos that eventually get deleted at the end of the day. Months later, the social media giant allowed users to create live videos on their “stories”, too.
To put it into context, Instagram Stories has been a massive success for the website, leading to a significant moment. By the start of 2019, it’s believed that half-a-billion people were utilizing the feature each day. However, outside of the big three social media services, there have been some other interesting apps emerging on the internet.
Back in 2013, a new video-sharing experience called Vine hit the app store, Android and Windows Phone within 12 months. Remarkably, the app allowed users to film and upload short clips on their account, lasting for around six seconds. And the public quickly took to it, as proved by the numbers on the iOS App Store that spring.
Indeed, the Vine was the store’s biggest download in relation to free apps, but there were more landmarks to come. Yes, around 12 months later, the Vine website then arrived on the internet, retaining the application’s main features. And just like the previous iteration, it went on to boast some impressive numbers.
In fact, in the winter of 2015 it’s believed that around 200 million people were using Vine, showcasing its popularity. But a few months on from that, though, everything changed. Suddenly, at the end of October 2016, it was confirmed that users couldn’t post any more pictures on the website. And this came ahead of another bombshell.
That’s right, in January 2017 Vine ended up closing its doors for good, much to the dismay of its fans. To help soften the blow, past videos could still be viewed on the service’s archive page, but the disappointment remained. And furthermore, work on a Vine successor stalled after the app’s owner, Twitter, ran into “legal hurdles”. However, later that year, users discovered another video-sharing application that arguably filled the void.
Now for social media users in China, an exciting new app called Douyin became available in September 2016. And the service became a smash hit there, as people were encouraged to upload short creative clips on their accounts. Astonishingly, over the course of the first 12 months, the application had gained around 100 million users. To add to that, it was getting one billion video views per day.
With this in mind, Douyin’s developer ByteDance then decided to create a similar application for those living outside of China. And from there, TikTok was born in September 2017, offering the same services to new users. Since then, the video-sharing app has capably taken Vine’s place, as proved by some eye-opening statistics.
Indeed, TikTok exceeded Vine’s success, with people across the world scrambling to download the service in 2018. For you see, it’s believed that the app had earned around 800 million downloads in that time. Meanwhile, in the U.S., it stacked up an additional 80 million downloads. Given those numbers, it’s now one of the most recognizable applications out there.
Due to that success, TikTok has become a social media trend-setter of sorts. And the uploaded videos range from lip-syncing clips to creative comedy skits, but that’s not all. Yes, furthermore the app also allows users to create memes. However, few people could have predicted what would happen in summer 2019.
Because several young women on TikTok ended up hitting the headlines when they inadvertently revived some old fashion trends. Now much like every generation, the 2000s boasted a distinctive style, which was reflected by the celebrities of the era. From the likes of Paris Hilton to Nicole Richie, these looks were often captured on camera.
And despite appearing quite minor, one of the more recognizable trends from the 2000s still had a sizable impact. You’ve guessed it, skinny eyebrows were often sported by the famous faces of yesteryear, backed up by colorful eyeshadow. Alongside those, it was also fashionable to wear a couple of striking accessories.
Yes, unbelievably Butterfly clips became a mainstay over that period, as they kept strands of hair out of girls’ faces. In addition to that, a number of women began wearing hoop earrings, bandanas and bucket hats as well. So since the 2000s, a lot of those trends have disappeared, but a few could be making a comeback.
For you see, thanks to that cluster of users on TikTok, the 2000s fashion era has hit the mainstream again. And in the videos, several young women respectively undergo makeovers to reflect looks from that period. But to tell the full story, we have to go back to the one person who kicked it all off.
Firstly, a TikTok user posting under the name @chaseevers shared a video titled, “Watch me transform into a 2000s girl.” In the resulting clip, she first applies some makeup to her cheeks, before adjusting her eyebrows. From here, the girl then adds bright blue eyeshadow to her eyelids, but her efforts don’t end there.
Indeed, @chaseevers follows that up by focusing on her eyelashes, ahead of the next step. At this point, she applies a bit of blush and adds some glossy pink lipstick. With the makeup complete, the user then decides to focus on her hair, as she grabs a colorful butterfly clip.
After adding the butterfly clip, @chaseevers’ video cuts to the finished result. In addition to the makeup, she’s changed her clothes here as well. In fact, she’s now sporting a bright green tank top and a pair of blue sunglasses. What’s more, the completed transformation is certainly impressive, as she resembles a number of famous faces from that time.
To top everything off, @chaseevers had another trick up her sleeve to make the video stand out. Thanks to TikTok’s features, she was able to add a backing track to her clip. And in keeping with the theme, the user decided to pick a song from the 2000s that was instantly recognizable.
That’s right, Britney Spears’ “Oops!… I Did It Again” was selected, rounding off the clip. Going back, the track hit the shelves in March 2000, before reaching the top of the charts in several countries. But the song’s success didn’t end there, though, as Spears also picked up some music award nominations.
Perhaps incredibly, the track’s music video scored three nominations at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000. And this came ahead of a significant nomination at the 2001 Grammy Awards. At that time, Spears was in the running for the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance gong. Of all her songs, “Oops!… I Did It Again” is one of her most notable efforts.
Meanwhile, @chaseevers’ video hit home on TikTok as users flocked to watch her remarkable transformation. Indeed, the clip has since earned over 665,000 likes, while also generating more than 3,500 comments. Now most of those messages were fairly positive, for example Kathryn Fanelli commented, “Hands down the best… ever,”. But few people could have foreseen what happened next.
As suggested by those numbers, @chaseevers’ efforts did not go at all unnoticed by people on the website. So with that in mind, other users decided to try their hand at a 2000s makeover as well. Indeed, the “copycats” were probably hoping to replicate her success. And from there, the TikTok fashion craze really kicked off.
Taking @chaseevers’ lead, each of the additional videos had a similar format, with users undergoing their own 2000s transformations. And much like her, they used “Oops!… I Did It Again” as a backing track as well. Incredibly, some of the resulting clips even managed to mirror the numbers of the first post.
Now posting under the name @sophiekraynak, a different user titled her video, “Flashback to the 2000s.” To kick things off, she applies some blusher to her cheeks, before focusing on her eyebrows. At this point, the girl picks out the same blue eyeshadow as @chaseevers, which she then spreads across her eyes.
And the TikTok video then cuts to a shot of @sophiekraynak adding some color to her lips. From here, the user also dons a pair of hoop earrings, completing the look. After this, she steps back from the camera and shows off her 2000s makeover, which brings things to a close.
Remarkably, @sophiekraynak’s effort was an even bigger hit on TikTok than the original @chaseevers video. Indeed, the latter clip earned over 823,000 likes on the social media platform, while also garnering more than 5,600 comments. Yes, this was almost 200,000 more likes and around 2,000 extra comments. On that note, the craze continued.
Mind you, in another post a user named @rosathetiktokqueen was set to change things up a little. And the resulting video was titled, “Watch me transform into a 2000s babe.” At the start, she applies some makeup under her eyes, before touching up her eyebrows. After this, the user continues to follow the example of the previous two clips.
However, @rosathetiktokqueen then changes tack when she grabs her eyeshadow. Indeed, compared to the other two girls, she opts for a pinkish color instead of blue. From here, she focuses on her eyelashes, ahead of adding some blush to the upper cheekbones. But the 2000s makeover doesn’t end there for the young lady.
At this point, @rosathetiktokqueen applies some dark lipstick. Once that’s done, the video cuts to a shot of her showcasing her new look. Now the user is sporting a pair of hoop earrings, alongside several butterfly clips in her hair. In addition to this, she’s wearing a pair of pink sunglasses as well, which concludes the short clip. Ultimately, you could be forgiven for thinking she now looks like a young Gwen Stefani.
Yet again, this third video generated another big reaction on TikTok, as users seemingly couldn’t get enough of the craze. And so far @rosathetiktokqueen’s post has earned more than 365,000 likes, as well as over 1,400 comments. What’s more, this unique trend started to spill over into the mainstream media.
Yes, due to the eye-watering figures on TikTok, other websites began to pick up on the growing trend. Unsurprisingly, BuzzFeed was one of them, with the site producing an article on the viral craze in July 2019. While commenting on the makeovers, it also included a number of other videos following the same pattern.
Off the back of that, @chaseevers responded to the coverage on BuzzFeed with another TikTok post. Alongside a shot of the web page on her laptop, she wrote a message that summed up her feelings. Unsurprisingly, the user was somewhat shocked that her video kick-started an online craze. Furthermore, in true 2000s style, she once again utilized Britney Spears’ iconic tune in the background.
“I just have no words,” @chaseevers wrote in the accompanying post. “None. They literally left my body. I started a trend. I never thought I’d have a BuzzFeed article about my video! Thank you guys for all the love on it.” Since being posted, her joyous words have earned around 3,600 likes on TikTok. Indeed, it’s enough to keep the trend ticking over.
